What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb (the endometrium) is found outside the womb, most commonly in the pelvic cavity. It can grow on organs including the ovaries, uterus, bowel and pelvic sidewall, causing inflammation and pain.
This is a very common condition, which affects an estimated 176 million women worldwide, 10% of women of reproductive age, including two million women in the UK. It is often diagnosed between the ages of 25 and 40, however symptoms regularly occur outside of this age range, highlighting the difficulties involved in diagnosis.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms can vary significantly from person to person, while some women may have no symptoms at all. Common complaints include painful periods, irregular bleeding, tiredness and difficulty getting pregnant. Many women will also suffer from pain in the pelvis, lower back, lower abdomen, and also in the area between their hips and the tops of their legs.
